The Council of the European Union has voted to create a unitary European patent that would mean substantial cost-savings for innovators in Europe. However, in the same week the Court of Justice of the European Union rejected the creation of a pan-European patent court. Without the establishment of such a court, GJE believes that the effectiveness of a pan-European patent will be seriously compromised.

The potential cost liability arising from IP litigation in the UK Patents County Court (PCC) has been a big obstacle for organisations wanting to protect their rights. Smaller businesses have found it difficult to enforce their rights against those with "deeper pockets" and so may have refrained from litigation activities. This changed from 1st October 2010.
GJE offers IP litigation services and can discuss fixed fee packages linked to the new capped costs.

Our clients Choi + Shine Architects received the 2010 Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Award for their innovative and striking pylon design, based on human figures these modern caryatids can be arranged in postures that are appropriate for their environment. The design was originally conceived for Icelandic power company Landsnet's 'Land of Giants' project, where it received an honourable mention. GJE advised Choi + Shine on an appropriate IP strategy, based on securing registered design protection for their humanoid pylon design

Michael Pritchard secures £125,000 on Dragons’ Den
for intellectual property licensing

Serial inventor Michael Pritchard has successfully secured funding on the BBC2 programme ‘Dragons’ Den’ for his ANYWAY® Spray invention. The deal centres on a joint investment by the two Dragons, Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis, of £125,000 for a 10 per cent equity stake each in an IP holding company owned with Michael Pritchard.
