In all countries, government patent and trade mark offices require the payment of renewal fees for granted patent, design and trade mark rights in order to keep the rights in force. The term of a patent is almost completely standardised around the world at 20 years from the application date. Trade marks, on the other hand, can remain in force indefinitely. The term of a design registration varies from one country to another.
In most countries renewal fees on granted patents are payable annually (the US being an exception, renewal fees being due approximately every 4 years there), and registered trade marks generally require the payment of a renewal fee every 10 years often together with a statement of evidence indicating use of the mark.
In order for clients to manage their diverse IP rights, we are able to pass the necessary data to CPA Global, who provide clients with reminders about due dates for paying renewal fees using a system which can be tailored to clients’ specific needs.
