Peter Thorniley - IT & Engineering

Senior Associate

Peter graduated from Oxford University with a Masters degree in Physics. His degree provided him with a wide range of technical experience, from the solution to complex mechanical problems and the fundamentals of optics through to the physics of semiconductor electronics. Peter's final year project was a mixture of computer engineering and astrophysics, involving the development of a computer simulation exploring the formation of stars, and in particular how the rotational velocity of galaxies affects the rate of star formation.

Peter Joined the profession in 2004 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2008, and as a British Patent Attorney in 2010. During his time in the profession, Peter has worked with a wide range of clients, from lone inventors looking for advice on their first patent application to multinational corporations looking to maintain their competitive edge. Peter has also advised university spin-outs and other SMEs with a particular view to attracting investment. As well as drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications throughout the world, Peter has experience of oppositions before the EPO, due diligence and freedom-to-operate reports, and providing advice to clients faced with threats of litigation.

Peter has provided intellectual property advice in a number of technical fields. In particular, he has extensive experience in the fields of photonics, semiconductor electronics and computer programs. He has also handled a wide range of mechanical inventions.

In his spare time, Peter is a keen musician, who reached a reasonable degree of proficiency playing classical guitar before allowing his focus to slip to rather less cerebral musical forms. He also enjoys football (playing and watching), skiing, walking and generally getting out of London when the chance arises.
