Michael joined GJE in 1998. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1995 with a first class Honours degree in Natural Sciences, specialising in Materials Science and Physics. Michael stayed on at Cambridge and obtained a PhD for his work in the design and modelling of novel ultra-high strength steel alloys, before joining GJE. He qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2002 and is also qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney. He joined the partnership in 2007.

Michael has a rapidly expanding electro-mechanical practice centred upon a number of UK clients, including Oxford Instruments, FFEI, Global Marine, De La Rue and Oracle. His overseas clients are numerous and include Xerox, VISA and Procter & Gamble. He regularly advises a range of clients from private inventors, through start-up companies and SMEs to multinationals.

Michael is experienced in all aspects of patent practice including the day-to-day drafting and prosecution matters, advising upon IP strategies, worldwide recordal of assignments and computer database searching, together with providing due diligence reports and infringement advice. He has been involved in UK and overseas patent litigation and also represents clients regularly at hearings before the European Patent Office. Although he is comfortable with most areas of physics and engineering his technical specialities include cryogenics, plasma processing, MRI, computer software, telecommunications, semiconductor devices, interactive television, process control, document security and processing, metallurgy and materials science.
