Matthew joined GJE in 2011 after six years with another London-based firm of patent attorneys. He graduated with a first class Honours degree in Astrophysics from University College, University of London, where he was also awarded a departmental prize. Subsequently he moved to Imperial College, gaining a Masters degree, with distinction in Optics and Photonics.

Matthew qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2010 and as a Chartered Patent Attorney in 2008 when he was awarded the Gill Prize by the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys for achieving the highest overall mark in the UK Chartered Patent Attorney finals examinations.

He has substantial experience drafting and prosecuting IT, high tech and business method patents in Europe and elsewhere. He has also prosecuted many applications on the borderline of patentable subject matter and has acted in a number of EPO oppositions.

Matthew enjoys covering a wide variety of technical disciplines with broad experience across the IT, mechanical and electrical engineering fields. This has involved him on patent projects in diverse sectors including remote sensing for geological and hydrocarbon exploration, financial services and banking systems, medical and diagnostic systems, waste treatment and disposal, online gaming networks, elevator control systems, semiconductor processing, and the automotive and aerospace industries.

Outside of work Matthew enjoys extreme gardening and plays both squash and the ukulele.
