John joined Gill Jennings & Every in 1996 after completing the MSc course in the Management of Intellectual Property at Queen Mary College (University of London).  Prior to that, after leaving Aberdeen University with an Honours Degree in Biochemistry, John worked for several years as a scientist in Celltech Plc. John qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2001 and joined the partnership in January 2003.

Working primarily with UK-based start-up companies, John has experience in obtaining patents for clients in a wide range of biotechnology subjects, including nucleic acid and protein sequencing, cell and protein-based vaccines, undifferentiated cell transplantation therapies, antibody technology, array-based diagnostics and drug delivery mechanisms. Current clients include: ReNeuron Limited, Emergent Biosolutions, GenProbe, Randox, Laboratories Limited, LingVitae AS and Sinclair Pharmaceuticals Plc.

John is a member of AIPPI and has lectured on the JDD Consultants course, helping to prepare students for their professional patent examinations.
